Do you ever find it difficult to motivate yourself to learn English? Maybe you have some days where you really want to do it and others when you are not in the mood. Maybe you even stop for a while and then get out of the habit. Today I have some suggestions for when you are struggling with your motivation. |
1 . Set some goals π―
It can help if you have a target. However, make sure your goal isn’t too big. If you say, “I want to speak English like a native speaker”, you will find it difficult to achieve this and you might lose your motivation. Make sure your goal is something much smaller and more realistic.
You could try something really small like learning five new words, watching one YouTube video or reading one page of your English book every day. Or you might set yourself a larger goal, such as taking an English exam.
2. Create a routineπ
I hate going to the supermarket! I used to put it off as long as possible. I even had arguments with myself in my head about whether I should or shouldn’t go! Sometimes, I ate everything in the freezer just to avoid it! Now I go shopping every Wednesday morning. I still hate it but it’s less of a struggle. I don’t argue with myself but I just go because it’s Wednesday!
This can work for studying too. Set yourself a time to study. This only needs to be a few minutes every day. In fact, several short study sessions a week are more effective than one long session at the weekend. And it’s easier to motivate yourself to do it. I find it easier to go for a short walk every day than a long walk less often. Make learning English a regular habit and it will get easier to do it.
3. Make it funππ
Learning English doesn’t always have to be “studying”. If you don’t feel like looking at the grammar books today, why not do something else for a change? Watch a YouTube video or a film in English, listen to a song or chat to international friends on social media.
4. Take a break ⏳
I try to post on social media every day but sometimes I find it difficult. If I have a short break, I find that I enjoy it more when I go back to it. The same might work for you with your English. It’s OK to take a break from time to time. Just don’t stay away from it for too long or it will be harder to come back!
5. You don’t have to do it alone π£π€
I’ve learnt languages in the past and I’ve always found it easier to do with other people than on my own. If you join a class, you are motivated to go because you’ve paid for it! Also, you’ll want to do your homework before the next lesson. With regular lessons, you can’t keep telling yourself that you’ll start tomorrow! And finally, it’s great to have friends to talk to and practise with, and they motivate you to keep going with your studies. And it’s simply more fun to do things with other people!
6. Remember why you are doing it ππ
If you think about the reasons you started learning English in the first place, this will help to motivate you to keep going when it’s tough. Remember how much you want to be able to communicate at work, or remind yourself how much you like English movies, or think about how happy you’ll be when you pass that exam!
I hope these suggestions help you! If you have any more ideas, why don’t you put them in the comments?

Nice suggestions Shweta thanks a lot.
